About

My name is Zac Counts and I’m a designer, illustrator, and artist working from Fort Smith, Arkansas. I studied design at Arkansas Tech University, where I graduated in 2015. Since graduating I’ve worked in-house on two nationally distributed print publications, worked for creative agencies in-house and contract, and have been privileged to work independently with clients ranging from Grammy Nominated artists, to corporate powerhouses. I also spend quite a bit of my time working on personal work with the hope of being shown in galleries.

College

While at Arkansas Tech University I studied Graphic Design, but spent a large amount of my time working in relief printmaking. During my upper level collegiate years, I earned opportunities to develop my skills as an artist by attending workshops and events that greatly impacted my artistic skills both technically and conceptually.

In 2014, I was granted financial assistance from ATU to attend Woodcut Bootcamp 2014 in St. Louis, MO, where I spent 10 days creating, learning, and studying under legendary artist/printmaker Tom Huck. The following year I received a Student Development Foundation award to attend the 2015 Frogman’s Printmaking Workshop at the University of South Dakota.

This is also around the time I started doing freelance design projects, murals, and started showing my early early work in galleries. After graduating, it became increasingly hard to find a printing press to use to print my work. This is around the time I started getting pretty heavy into Adobe Illustrator. I started by creating vector versions of some relief prints I’d already created so that I would have a pretty good outline to follow, and could just focus on learning the technical aspects of the program.

Professional

Over my professional career I’ve grained experience in a wide array of media and fields in the creative industry. While in college I gained professional experience working as an Art Department student worker, where I spent most of my time designing flyers and print material for the university, or assisting fellow students in the after hours graphic design lab. After graduating I worked in house at Target Media Partners in Little Rock, Arkansas on two nationally distributed publication where my key duties included designing ad’s and laying out articles. While this was a very beneficial experience, this position made it very apparent how much I liked working in primarily digital spaces.

With this in mind, I set my sights on working somewhere focused on creative in the digital space. After interning for a couple months, I earned a position as a graphic and web designer for Jetfuel Creative in Tampa, FL. While working at Jetfuel I gained a wide variety of skills ranging creative skills like UI/UX and brand identity, to more technical skills like web development and running digital campaigns.

While working at Jetfuel I also involved in working on projects for Shirley/Hutchinson Creative Works. Shirley/Hutchinson is an award winning ad agency in Tampa, FL that focuses on developing strategic marketing campaigns, and brand identity systems. I was able to soak up a ton of knowledge from veteran members of the team about how to focus on strategy over a wide variety of media including: digital, print, TV commercials, and more.
